About Double Eyelid Threads

The aim of the non-surgical double eyelid procedure is to create desired double eyelids using threads. There is no scar as there are no skin incisions — just a few threads on each upper eyelid.

Non-surgical procedures are typically less invasive than surgical alternatives, and the following are the advantages:

  • no surgery
  • lower complications
  • less downtime
  • avoiding scarring
  • takes 20 minutes
  • can be performed in our clinic
  • results are permanent

Dr Peter Kim specialises in creating double eyelids non-surgically by placing threads into the upper eyelids. With 20 years of experience in this technique, he has published numerous papers on his expertise in double eyelid threads.

How Does It Work?

Marking the desired double eyelid shape before placing threads
The desired double eyelid shape is marked on the upper eyelid. Following the administration of local anaesthesia, threads are strategically placed in the upper eyelid to create the desired double eyelid shape.

Three to four threads are inserted into the upper eyelid skin to achieve the desired double eyelid shape and thickness. This technique is illustrated in the diagram featured in the American Journal of Cosmetic Surgery by Dr Peter Kim.

Procedure Details & Suitability

The Procedure — step by step

1

The desired double eyelid shape is marked on the upper eyelid.

2

Local anaesthesia is administered.

3

Three to four threads are strategically placed in each upper eyelid to create the desired double eyelid shape and thickness.

4

After the threads are inserted, we show the patient the result and ask whether they are satisfied with the shape.

5

Once we are content with the outcome, the threads are cut off at skin level, burying the knots.

The procedure takes around 20 minutes and can be performed in our clinic.

Who Are the Right Candidates?

This depends on the desired double eyelid shape and the patient’s current eyelid anatomy. Everyone is different. The best option is to come in for a consultation. Dr Peter Kim will show on your eyelid several different types of double eyelids that may suit you.

The result is permanent, but not everyone is suitable for this procedure. Where there is excess skin hooding or fat removal is desirable, surgical double eyelid surgery may be recommended instead.

Published Technique — Durable Suture Technique

Dr Kim invented the Durable Suture Technique, in which the upper eyelid crease is created by stitching it down to the tarsal plate. It was originally published in the Australasian Journal of Cosmetic Surgery in 2009, and a 15-year follow-up study on the technique was published in the American Journal of Cosmetic Surgery in 2023.
