Is Upper Blepharoplasty Right for You?

Upper blepharoplasty may be suitable for people who have:

  • Heavy or hooded upper eyelids
  • Excess upper eyelid skin
  • A tired or aged appearance around the eyes
  • Difficulty applying eye make-up because of excess eyelid skin
  • Upper eyelid skin that partially obstructs vision

Every patient undergoes a comprehensive consultation to determine whether upper blepharoplasty is appropriate and to discuss expected outcomes, recovery and potential risks.

Upper Blepharoplasty Under Local Anaesthesia

Most upper blepharoplasty procedures are performed under local anaesthesia in our accredited procedure room. For suitable patients, surgery is completed in approximately 40 minutes as a day procedure without the need for hospital admission or general anaesthesia.

Why Does Dr Peter Kim Use a CO2 Laser?

Dr Peter Kim routinely uses a CO2 laser during upper blepharoplasty because it offers several practical advantages during surgery. Potential benefits include:

  • Precise tissue removal
  • Excellent control of bleeding, helping to maintain a clear surgical field
  • Additional tightening of the upper eyelid skin through the laser’s thermal effect
  • Precise surgical technique that supports careful tissue handling

For suitable patients, these advantages may contribute to a smoother surgical procedure and a more comfortable postoperative recovery. Every patient is different, and healing times and results will vary.

Procedure Details, Recovery & Risks

Location of Procedure

Blepharoplasty is performed under local anaesthesia in our Chatswood Clinic’s procedure room. It is considered a minor operation and there is no need for it to be performed in an accredited day surgery or hospital setting.

AHPRA guideline permits blepharoplasty to be performed in a doctor’s clinic.

The Medical Board’s Guidelines for registered medical practitioners who perform cosmetic surgery and procedures require all cosmetic surgery (except certain types of blepharoplasty) to be performed in a facility that is accredited by an ACSQHC approved agency.

The Procedure — step by step

1

Dr Peter Kim confirms the instructions from the patient and marks the surgical plan on the patient's eyelids.

2

Photos are taken to ensure the drawings match the desired eyelid shape.

3

Local anaesthesia is injected.

4

Sagging upper eyelid skin is removed, protruding fat is removed, and the subcutaneous layer is tightened with laser.

5

Skin is sutured. The procedure takes around one hour to complete.

6

You stay in our clinic for about 30 minutes to ensure there is no bleeding and vital observations are normal.

7

Staff explain the aftercare instructions. All medications, prescription ointments, antiseptics and gauzes are provided so you can go home directly on discharge.

8

You are discharged under the care of an adult or via Uber/Taxi, with Dr Peter Kim's direct mobile number in case of emergency.

Post-Op Recovery

  • The degree of swelling of eyelids is the most common concern voiced to us by patients after blepharoplasty.
  • Most people will take 1–2 weeks off work.
  • The swelling generally takes 3 months to fully settle; it is generally substantially improved within 2 weeks and most people are able to return to work.
  • Some eyelids will swell more than others, and one side is always more swollen and bruised than the other.

Bruising and a small haematoma during the postoperative period after blepharoplasty
The degree of bruising following blepharoplasty varies between individuals. In this case, the patient developed a small haematoma during the postoperative period, which resolved with conservative management. Healing and recovery timelines vary between patients.
Uneven swelling and lumpiness settling over time after blepharoplasty
Uneven swelling or lumpiness may occur following blepharoplasty as part of the healing process. As swelling gradually settles, the appearance of the eyelids may change over time. Healing timelines and final outcomes vary between individuals.
